Grandpa Plans Ahead

My mother traditionally requests a Christmas list by October. Furthermore, my birthday is only a month after Christmas, so my birthday presents are usually Christmas list leftovers. So that’s why I’ve started thinking about it this early. The things I want suggest that I’m really a seventy-year-old man. Basically if you ever want to buy me a present just try to think of something you might get your grandpa. Especially if it involves boats or sea creatures.

  • Vintage-y globe and/or a map that includes misshapen continents and sea monsters… pretty much anything nautical especially if it is also old timey; and/or a compass that looks cool and is small enough to carry around (concrete jungle, y’all)
  • The Oxford Atlas of the World, Sixteenth Edition (out soon! exciting!)
  • Classy but not too classy hip flask (for whiskey)
  • Subscription to The Economist
  • Prescription sunglasses from See
  • This poster, framed
"The secret to The Economist’s success? Well, it’s complicated (exemplary branding, a global recession) but the short answer, and one we might learn from is this: The magazine does not try to be all things to all people. It fills a need. Its promise is clear. In Hirschorn’s words, “niche is sometimes the smartest way to take over the world."
Birthday List

1. Subscription to The Economist

If you order now I should definitely have the first issue in time. Thanks!
